Mercedes-Benz MB.CHARGE Public launches in Malaysia with access to 3,000+ charging points

Finding an EV charger is not always the hardest part of a journey. Sometimes the bigger frustration is figuring out how many charging apps, accounts and payment methods a driver needs along the way.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is now trying to simplify that experience with the local introduction of MB.CHARGE Public.

The service integrates participating public charging networks into the Mercedes-Benz App and MBUX ecosystem, allowing owners to search for compatible chargers, view pricing information, start charging sessions and handle payments through a more unified platform.

Mercedes-Benz currently says MB.CHARGE Public provides access to more than 1,000 locations and over 3,000 charging points, with coverage extending across Malaysia and Singapore.

Mercedes-Benz did not build 3,000 new chargers

The distinction is important.

MB.CHARGE Public does not mean Mercedes-Benz now owns or has constructed more than 3,000 public chargers in Malaysia.

Instead, the service acts as an integration layer connecting participating Charging Point Operators, or CPOs, to Mercedes-Benz's own digital ecosystem.

The networks currently listed by Mercedes-Benz include chargEV, JomCharge, Zap, Gentari, DC Handal, ChargeSini, CDG ENGIE, SP Group, Charge+ and Volt.

The real value therefore lies not in creating thousands of new charging points, but in making existing public charging infrastructure easier for Mercedes-Benz drivers to access through one account and interface.

One charging account across different operators

One of the main ideas behind MB.CHARGE Public is reducing the need for drivers to create separate accounts and repeatedly enter payment information for different charging networks.

Once the service is activated, compatible stations can be located through the Mercedes-Benz App or the vehicle's MBUX system.

Before charging begins, the system can display the relevant tariff information, including charging costs based on the operator's applicable pricing structure.

That does not mean all stations suddenly use the same charging rate. Each participating operator continues to apply its own standard pricing.

The difference is that supported charging sessions can be managed through MB.CHARGE Public using the driver's stored payment details, reducing the need to repeat the process across separate CPO platforms.

Malaysia and Singapore under the same ecosystem

Another practical aspect for Malaysian drivers is that MB.CHARGE Public currently extends into Singapore as well.

For EV owners who regularly travel between Malaysia and Singapore, this means the Mercedes-Benz charging ecosystem is not confined to domestic journeys.

Available chargers, operators, tariffs and station status will still differ from one market to another, but supported locations can continue to be accessed through the Mercedes-Benz App and MBUX environment.

It is another sign that EV competition is gradually moving beyond simply asking how far a vehicle can travel on one charge.

The wider ownership experience increasingly includes what happens after the driver leaves home: how easily a charger can be found, whether another app is required and how complicated the payment process becomes.

3,000+ charging points does not mean every charger is always available

The headline number also needs some context.

Even when a charging operator is part of the MB.CHARGE Public network, it does not necessarily mean every charger operated by that company will be compatible with the service at all times.

Actual availability still depends on whether a particular station has been integrated into the system, the operating status of the charging equipment and the service conditions of the relevant operator.

The Mercedes-Benz App and MBUX identify stations that can be used through MB.CHARGE Public. Stations that are not compatible cannot be activated or paid for through the service.

Premium EV competition is moving into the charging experience

MB.CHARGE Public was introduced alongside the new Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+, and the timing is significant.

The new CLA already brings an 800V electrical architecture, DC charging at up to 320kW and the new MB.OS software platform. But how quickly a car can theoretically charge is only one part of the EV experience.

As electric vehicles become more common, drivers are increasingly likely to ask another question: once they arrive at a charging station, how many apps, accounts and payment systems are required before they can actually plug in?

MB.CHARGE Public is Mercedes-Benz's attempt to solve that part of the ownership experience.

Malaysia's public charging network is growing, but the number of separate charging apps remains a very real usability issue for EV drivers. What makes MB.CHARGE Public interesting is not that Mercedes-Benz suddenly owns more than 3,000 chargers, but that the carmaker is bringing fragmented public networks into the same vehicle, app, account and payment ecosystem. As EVs become closer in range and charging performance, the brands that make finding, starting and paying for a charging session easier may gain an increasingly important advantage.
