The third-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA has officially arrived in Malaysia, and its final price is one of the more interesting parts of the launch.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ AMG Line with EQ Technology is priced at RM274,888 on the road without insurance. That is RM21,000 lower than the roughly RM295,888 indicative price announced when the model was previewed and opened for bookings earlier this year.

Malaysia initially receives the fully electric CLA 250+, but this is more than simply an electric replacement for the previous CLA.

The new model is one of the key production vehicles built around the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture, or MMA. Along with a new electrical and software foundation, it introduces an 800V high-voltage system and an unusual two-speed transmission integrated into the rear electric drive unit.

Lower final price changes the equation

For Malaysian buyers, the final price may be just as significant as the technology underneath the car.

RM274,888 still places the CLA 250+ firmly in premium EV territory, but moving RM21,000 below the earlier indicative figure gives it a noticeably different market position.

The premium EV market is also considerably more crowded than it was only a few years ago. Buyers are now comparing not only badges and performance, but also range, charging capability, software integration and overall value.

Mercedes-Benz therefore has more than the CLA name to rely on. Some of the most important changes in this generation are found beneath the bodywork.

800V architecture and up to 320kW DC charging

The CLA 250+ uses an 85kWh battery and offers an official driving range of up to 792km.

The words “up to” matter. Real-world range will vary according to speed, driving style, traffic, weather, air-conditioning use and other conditions, so 792km should not be treated as a guaranteed distance on every full charge.

The car uses an 800V electrical architecture and supports DC fast charging at up to 320kW.

Under suitable conditions, Mercedes-Benz says the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in around 22 minutes. A 10-minute charging session can add up to approximately 325km of range, while AC charging is handled by an 11kW onboard charger.

The significance of 320kW is not simply the headline figure. As higher-output public chargers become more common, the vehicle itself is less likely to become the limiting factor in charging speed.

Why does an EV need two gears?

One of the CLA 250+'s more unusual engineering features is its two-speed transmission within the rear electric drive unit.

The single rear-mounted motor drives the rear wheels and produces 200kW, equivalent to 272hp, together with 335Nm of torque. Mercedes-Benz quotes a 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 210km/h.

The first gear uses an 11:1 ratio, while the second uses a 5:1 ratio.

This is not a conventional multi-speed automatic gearbox of the type found in a combustion-engined car. Most EVs use a single reduction gear because electric motors can operate effectively across a wide range of speeds.

Mercedes-Benz has added a second ratio to broaden the operating efficiency of the electric drivetrain across different speed ranges, giving the CLA a different technical approach from the many EVs that rely on a single-speed drive.

The three-pointed star becomes a design theme

If the drivetrain represents the technical shift, the exterior makes very little effort to hide the car's identity as a Mercedes-Benz.

The new CLA retains the low fastback proportions associated with the nameplate, but the three-pointed star motif now appears throughout the design.

The closed front panel incorporates 142 chrome-effect star elements, while the daytime running lights adopt a star-shaped signature. The rear lighting follows a similar visual theme.

The CLA measures 4,723mm long, 1,855mm wide and 1,468mm tall, with a 2,790mm wheelbase.

Its rear luggage compartment offers 405 litres of space, while the EV architecture also creates a 101-litre front storage compartment.

A showcase for Mercedes-Benz's new software platform

The CLA is also one of the first models to bring Mercedes-Benz's latest digital architecture into a more mainstream part of the range.

The MBUX Superscreen combines a 10.25-inch driver display with two 14-inch screens for the central infotainment system and front passenger.

Underneath is the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS, together with the fourth generation of MBUX.

The more meaningful change is not simply the number of screens. Navigation, vehicle functions, infotainment, charging services and other Mercedes-Benz digital features are becoming increasingly integrated into the same software environment.

The cabin also features a large panoramic glass roof with heat-reducing and Low-Emissivity coatings. How well that performs under Malaysia's heat, however, is something that will be better judged after extended real-world use.

MB.CHARGE Public arrives at the same time

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia also introduced MB.CHARGE Public alongside the CLA 250+.

This does not mean Mercedes-Benz has built thousands of its own chargers in Malaysia. Instead, the service integrates participating public charging-point operators into the Mercedes-Benz App and MBUX ecosystem, allowing drivers to search for chargers, initiate sessions and handle payments through a more unified interface.

Information presented at the launch stated that the service can provide access to around 3,000 charging points across more than 1,000 locations in Malaysia.

There is enough behind that figure to warrant a separate story, particularly the operators involved and how the system works for Malaysian and cross-border EV users. Move Auto will examine MB.CHARGE Public separately.

Move Auto Take

The significance of the new CLA goes beyond simply replacing combustion power with electricity. Mercedes-Benz is bringing 800V charging, a two-speed electric drivetrain, MB.OS and a wider charging ecosystem into one of its more accessible model lines. The RM21,000 reduction from the earlier indicative price also makes the CLA 250+ considerably easier to place on a premium-EV shopping list. The next question is how its headline 792km range, 320kW charging capability and panoramic glass roof perform in everyday Malaysian conditions.
