Mercedes-AMG GT 53 EV Arrives With 400 kW and Up to 809 km of Range

Not every electric AMG needs four-figure horsepower.

Mercedes-AMG has expanded its new electric GT 4-Door Coupé family with the GT 53 4MATIC+, a less extreme but arguably more usable alternative to the higher-output GT 55 and GT 63.

Instead of the three-motor layout used by its more powerful siblings, the GT 53 runs a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing up to 400 kW and 800 Nm. It is paired with a 106 kWh battery and an 800-volt electrical architecture, while preliminary WLTP figures suggest a maximum driving range of up to 809 km.

Those numbers still put it firmly in high-performance territory. But unlike the headline-grabbing versions at the top of the range, the GT 53 looks much more like an electric grand tourer designed to cover serious distances rather than simply win a horsepower contest.

Less power, but still very much an AMG

The GT 53 uses one electric motor on each axle and Mercedes-AMG's Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system.

Continuous output is rated at 270 kW, while peak output rises to 400 kW, equivalent to roughly 544 PS. Maximum torque stands at 800 Nm.

You may also see the same output quoted as 536 hp in US reports. That difference comes down to the horsepower unit being used rather than a different specification. Using Mercedes-AMG's figure, 400 kW is the clearest reference point.

Acceleration remains properly quick. The GT 53 can complete the 0-100 km/h run in 3.5 seconds when measured with a one-foot rollout. Without that rollout method, some reports list a slightly slower figure.

That distinction matters because rollout removes the first 30.48 cm of movement from the acceleration timing, making the quoted result a little more flattering than a conventional standing-start measurement.

Its biggest advantage may actually be range

The more interesting part of the GT 53 story is not what Mercedes-AMG removed, but what the car gains as a result.

Its 106 kWh high-voltage battery uses directly cooled cylindrical cells and works with an 800V architecture designed for both sustained performance and very high charging speeds.

Preliminary WLTP figures put maximum range at 809 km, giving the GT 53 a strong case as the long-distance member of the electric GT family.

Mercedes-AMG also claims DC charging capability of up to 600 kW under suitable conditions. At that rate, around 534 km of WLTP range can theoretically be added in 10 minutes, while a 10 to 80 per cent charge is quoted at roughly 11 minutes. Of course, seeing 600 kW on the car's specification sheet does not mean owners will regularly encounter a charger capable of delivering it. Actual charging performance will depend on infrastructure, battery temperature, state of charge and other conditions.

Still, the number tells us something important about the platform: AMG is designing this car not only to discharge energy very quickly, but also to absorb it at an equally serious rate.

AMG is trying to put some theatre back into EV driving

Electric performance cars have already proven they can be brutally fast. The harder question is whether they can also feel memorable.

Mercedes-AMG clearly knows this.

The GT 53 features AMGFORCE S+, which uses simulated gear changes, torque interruptions, sound and haptic feedback to recreate some of the rhythm normally associated with a combustion-powered performance car.

Interestingly, the GT 53 does not simply copy the V8-inspired soundtrack used elsewhere in the new electric GT family. Is artificial engine sound the same thing as a real straight-six working its way through the rev range? Obviously not.

But the idea itself says a lot about where AMG sees the real challenge of electrification. Once exhaust noise, rising engine revs and mechanical gear changes disappear, engineers have to find other ways to make acceleration feel like an event rather than just a number on a screen.

A grand tourer first, not a stripped-out track car

The chassis setup follows the same philosophy.

The GT 53 is equipped with AMG RIDE CONTROL air suspension and adaptive damping, giving it a broader brief than a pure track-focused machine. The goal is to combine the body control expected of an AMG with the comfort needed for long motorway journeys.

Active aerodynamic elements are also part of the package. The rear spoiler can adjust according to driving conditions, while AMG's Airpanel system manages airflow through the front of the car depending on cooling demand.

This matters in an EV because aerodynamic efficiency is not only about top speed or stability. Every reduction in drag can also translate into useful range.

The cabin still remembers that GT stands for Gran Turismo

Inside, the new GT 4-Door Coupé tries to strike the same balance between sports car and luxury grand tourer.

The digital cockpit combines a 10.2-inch instrument display with a 14-inch central multimedia screen, while a separate 14-inch passenger display is also available. Mercedes-AMG has not moved every function into the touchscreen either, with physical rotary controls retained on the centre console for key driving adjustments. The seating position is deliberately low to create a more sports-car-like driving environment, while the four-door layout and rear seating keep the car useful enough for everyday duties.

That combination is important. The GT 53 is not supposed to be an electric supercar with two extra doors attached. It is meant to be a genuine grand tourer that can cover distance quickly, quietly and comfortably when the driver is not using all 400 kW.

What does it mean for Malaysia?

Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG already have a well-established customer base in Malaysia, so any new high-performance model from Affalterbach is naturally relevant to the local market.

That does not mean the GT 53 is confirmed for Malaysia.

For now, there is no official Malaysian launch date, local price or confirmed allocation for this particular version. Until Mercedes-Benz Malaysia makes an announcement, it would be premature to assume the GT 53 will be sold here.

Still, the car is worth watching because it represents a potentially important shift in the performance-EV market.

The first wave of electric performance flagships often focused on huge outputs and spectacular acceleration. The GT 53 suggests the next step may be slightly different: still very fast, but with more emphasis on range, charging speed and everyday usability.

For buyers who actually want to travel long distances in a high-performance EV, that might be the more interesting formula.

The GT 53 may be the least outrageous version of the new electric AMG GT family, but that could also make it one of the most interesting.

Electric cars no longer need to prove they can accelerate quickly. The harder job for a brand like AMG is preserving the sense of occasion that made buyers willing to pay extra for an AMG in the first place.

Simulated shifts, synthetic engine sound and haptic feedback will not convince everyone. But at least AMG is acknowledging that performance is about more than a stopwatch. If the electric era is going to work for enthusiast brands, character may eventually matter more than another 100 horsepower.
