McLaren brings back the manual with McL 6GT, revisiting Bruce McLaren’s unfinished road-car dream
McLaren is using the McL 6GT to revisit something its modern road cars have largely left behind: a genuine three-pedal manual gearbox.
Shown as a pre-production prototype during Monterey Car Week 2026, the McL 6GT is expected to become a limited-production model in 2028, positioned outside McLaren's core range. Full engine displacement, power and performance figures have not been released, but the key layout is already clear: V8 power, a six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive and hydraulic steering.
The significance is less about another headline performance number and more about the type of interaction McLaren wants the car to deliver.
A new car built around an unfinished piece of McLaren history
The McL 6GT is not the same car as the M6GT of the late 1960s, nor is it simply a replica. Its name and purpose point back to one of Bruce McLaren's earliest road-car ambitions.
The successful M6A Can-Am programme helped lead to the M6GT, an attempt to translate McLaren's racing engineering into a road-going GT. McLaren's own heritage material describes the M6GT as its first road-car project and links it to Bruce's wider ambition to take a McLaren-built car to Le Mans.
Bruce McLaren died in a testing accident at Goodwood in 1970, and the M6GT production plan did not continue. McLaren's later road-car story would eventually be transformed by the F1, introduced in 1992.
That makes the McL 6GT a continuation of an idea rather than a recreation of an old shape.
The manual returns after more than three decades
Since the F1 era, McLaren's modern road cars have increasingly relied on faster automated transmissions. The McL 6GT deliberately changes that relationship with a six-speed manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive and hydraulic steering.
The exposed shift mechanism makes the act of changing gear part of the cabin design itself, with a Speedy Kiwi heritage detail incorporated into the shifter. Quilted upholstery, Alcantara and visible carbon fibre combine historical references with a contemporary McLaren structure.
Analogue engagement does not mean rejecting modern engineering
The car still uses contemporary carbon-fibre construction and digital instrumentation. The point is not to pretend the last three decades of supercar engineering never happened.
Instead, the McL 6GT gives some of the interaction back to the driver. Operating a clutch, choosing a gear and feeling hydraulic steering feedback may not produce the fastest possible lap time, but they create a different kind of involvement.
There is renewed interest in this sort of mechanical engagement at the high end of the performance-car market, but it would be misleading to describe it as an industry-wide return to manual transmissions. The McL 6GT is a deliberately specialised example of how driver engagement can become part of the product proposition once outright performance is no longer the only differentiator.
There is still time for the specification to change
The car shown in 2026 is a pre-production prototype and the planned production timing remains 2028. McLaren has not yet published complete output or performance data, so those gaps should not be filled with assumptions.
For now, the confirmed story is already distinctive enough: V8 power, a true six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive, hydraulic steering and a modern road-car project built around Bruce McLaren's unfinished M6GT idea.

The interesting part of the McL 6GT is not that McLaren has suddenly become anti-technology. It is that a brand built around speed is willing to treat physical participation as a luxury feature. When automated systems can make every action faster, a clutch pedal, a manual shift and hydraulic steering can become valuable precisely because they ask more from the driver.
