Malaysia vehicle production hits 30-month high in July as sales reach 73,615 units

Malaysia’s automotive market maintained its growth momentum in July 2026, with total industry volume (TIV) reaching 73,615 units. This represented an 8% increase from June and a 5% increase compared with the same month last year.

Vehicle production was even more notable. A total of 75,490 vehicles were produced during the month, marking the highest monthly output since January 2024 and a new 30-month high.

Passenger vehicles remain the main growth driver

According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), passenger vehicle sales reached 68,900 units in July, up 7% year-on-year.

Commercial vehicle sales, meanwhile, declined 16% year-on-year to 4,715 units.

The figures show that passenger vehicles continued to provide most of the growth in Malaysia’s new-vehicle market.

Vehicle production reaches a 30-month high

Total vehicle production rose 5% year-on-year to 75,490 units, the highest monthly level recorded since January 2024.

MAA attributed much of the increase to stronger production activity among national carmakers, with higher passenger vehicle output helping to offset weaker commercial vehicle production.

For the first seven months of 2026, Malaysia produced a total of 432,436 vehicles, representing a 2% increase compared with the same period last year.

The higher production level also suggests that vehicle supply remains healthy as carmakers prepare for new-model deliveries and promotional activity during the second half of the year.

Pick-up sales rebound 30% from June

Another notable development in July came from the pick-up segment.

MAA said pick-up sales increased by 30% compared with June, with the BUDI Diesel arrangements introduced from July among the factors supporting demand.

The rebound is particularly significant because pick-up sales were among the weaker areas of the Malaysian vehicle market during the first half of the year, following changes to diesel subsidy arrangements.

The improvement in July could therefore be an early indication that the diesel pick-up market is beginning to adjust to the new subsidy structure.

However, a single month of growth is not enough to confirm a full recovery. Sales performance over the next few months will provide a clearer indication of whether the rebound can be sustained.

Nearly 459,000 vehicles sold in seven months

Between January and July 2026, Malaysia recorded total new-vehicle sales of 458,968 units, up 3% compared with the same period last year.

MAA previously revised its full-year 2026 TIV forecast upward from 790,000 units to 800,000 units.

Based on the latest cumulative sales figure, Malaysia has already achieved approximately 57% of that full-year target.

This means the market will need to sell roughly another 341,000 vehicles during the final five months of the year to reach the 800,000-unit forecast.

August promotions could support momentum

MAA expects market momentum to remain steady in August, supported by promotional campaigns and continued new-model activity.

With Merdeka promotions under way and more vehicle launches expected during the second half of the year, sales over the coming months will determine whether Malaysia can reach MAA’s revised 800,000-unit TIV target for 2026.

July’s figures are more significant than the headline 5% increase in vehicle sales alone. The 75,490-unit production figure and the 30% month-on-month rebound in pick-up sales are arguably the more interesting developments.

The former shows that national carmakers continue to maintain strong production momentum, while the latter may indicate that the pick-up market is beginning to respond to changes in diesel subsidy arrangements.

At the same time, July was a full working month and promotional activity remained active across the industry. One strong month alone is therefore not enough to conclude that the market has entered a new period of rapid growth.

The key questions now are whether the pick-up recovery can continue and whether Malaysia can maintain sufficient monthly sales during the final five months of the year to push full-year TIV to 800,000 units.
