Ford Fathom Electric Pickup Targets US$28,000 Starting Price, Deliveries Due in 2027
Ford has officially given a name to its upcoming affordable midsize electric pickup: Fathom. With a starting price of about US$28,000 and deliveries expected in 2027, the truck will become the first production model based on Ford's new Universal EV Platform.
For now, though, this is not a full vehicle reveal. Ford has confirmed the name and broad pricing direction, but the final design, EPA-rated range, battery capacity, charging times, towing capability and payload figures have yet to be announced. In other words, we now know what it is called and roughly how much it should cost — but the truck itself is still largely under wraps.
Ford Wants to Push Electric Pickup Prices Lower
Fathom is expected to be a four-door midsize electric pickup with a starting price of around US$28,000 when it reaches the market in 2027. That puts affordability at the centre of the project rather than headline-grabbing horsepower figures or an oversized battery pack.
When Ford first outlined its Universal EV Platform in 2025, the company was aiming for a starting price of roughly US$30,000 for its first midsize electric truck. The newer US$28,000 figure moves that target even lower and gives a clearer picture of where Ford wants to position the vehicle.
Whether that price can be maintained once the final trim structure, equipment levels and market-specific costs are factored in will be one of the biggest questions surrounding Fathom.
The Bigger Story Is How Ford Plans to Build It
The truck itself may attract most of the attention, but the more important development sits underneath it: Ford's Universal EV Platform and the accompanying Universal EV Production System.
Instead of building the vehicle along one long conventional assembly line, Ford plans to divide major sections of the vehicle into three parallel production streams. The front body, rear body and structural battery assembly are produced separately before the major modules are brought together.
According to Ford, the new approach can reduce the number of parts by about 20%, fasteners by 25% and workstations by 40% compared with a typical vehicle. The company also expects final assembly to become around 15% faster.
This matters because the cost challenge facing affordable EVs goes far beyond the battery itself. Traditional carmakers also have to deal with complex vehicle structures, high parts counts, expensive production lines and the difficulty of reaching enough scale to make lower-priced EVs profitable.
Ford's approach with Fathom is therefore not simply about removing equipment to reach a lower sticker price. The company is trying to reduce cost at the engineering and manufacturing level before the vehicle even reaches the showroom.
LFP Batteries Are Part of the Cost Strategy
The Universal EV Platform will use prismatic lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, batteries, with the battery pack integrated as part of the vehicle structure.
LFP chemistry generally avoids the use of nickel and cobalt and has become an increasingly common choice for more affordable EVs, where cost, durability and battery life can matter more than chasing the highest possible energy density.
Ford has confirmed that the first midsize pickup from the platform will be built at Louisville Assembly Plant, while LFP battery production will be supported by BlueOval Battery Park Michigan.
Key specifications remain missing, however. Ford has not yet announced Fathom's final battery capacity, EPA range or maximum DC fast-charging rate, so early estimates should not be treated as production figures.
What About Malaysia?
Fathom is particularly interesting from a Malaysian perspective because Ford already has a strong presence in the local pickup market through the Ranger.
If the company eventually expands the affordable electric pickup programme to right-hand-drive markets, the potential audience could extend beyond existing EV buyers. A practical electric pickup could also appeal to drivers who already value the cabin space, cargo flexibility and lifestyle versatility associated with conventional pickups.
There is no confirmation of that yet. Ford has not announced a right-hand-drive version of Fathom, and no Malaysian launch plan has been revealed. At this stage, the more realistic approach is to watch which export markets Ford eventually confirms and whether right-hand-drive production becomes part of the programme.
What makes Fathom interesting is not simply the idea of a cheap electric pickup. Ford is trying to tackle the harder problem facing established carmakers: how to make lower-priced EVs cheaper to manufacture in the first place.
If the Universal EV Platform can genuinely cut parts, production steps and factory complexity without sacrificing quality, the impact could go well beyond one pickup. It could become the foundation for a much broader range of affordable Ford EVs.
US$28,000 is still only the opening number, though. Range, charging performance, equipment, build quality and the eventual transaction price will determine whether Fathom becomes a genuine cost breakthrough or simply another EV with an attractive entry price.
